Active Schools is a term given to all schools in Scotland that provide pupils with sufficient opportunities to get active to the extent that it makes a positive contribution to their health. The aim of the Active Schools Network is to offer all children and young people the opportunities and motivation to adopt active, healthy lifestyles, now and into adulthood.

Active Schools, despite its name, goes beyond the school. It’s an ethos; the desire to see children and young people engaged in an active lifestyle that will positively affect their involvement in physical activity and sport, now and into the future. Schools have a major role to play, with the idea that they become the hub for delivering a varied programme of activities, both in the school (pupils & staff) and in the wider community.

Secondly, Active Schools is building links within the wider community in order to allow pupils to continue developing their sporting experience outside of school. This may be as simple as continuing to play a sport or physical activity socially with people that have a similar interest. Likewise it may result in more serious participation in sport, developing through the club structures into competitive sport.

The Active Schools Team in East Ayrshire are responsible for putting in place and driving forward a range of planned activities in both school and community settings to help encourage children and young people’s participation in the physical activity and sport.

The Active Schools Team in East Ayrshire comprises of an Active Schools Manager, nine joint Active Schools Coordinators, one ASN Active Schools Coordinator & a part-time Active Schools Coordinator designated to Communities (see links on right menu).
